STONECREST

-in progress-

Perched atop a rocky hillside overlooking the sweeping landscape of the Mission Valley near Flathead Lake in Polson, Stonecrest is a home shaped by its terrain. The residence is carefully embedded into the sloping site, allowing the architecture to feel grounded in the land while opening outward to expansive western views.

The home’s material palette — stone, wood, and corrugated metal — draws directly from the rugged character of the surrounding landscape. Weathered and restrained, the exterior composition balances durability with warmth, pairing low horizontal rooflines with textured natural materials that settle quietly into the hillside.

Approaching the home from above, the upper level presents itself as a modest, low-slung structure that follows the contours of the ridge. The understated entry sequence gives way to a dramatic interior experience. Crossing the threshold, visitors arrive at a mezzanine overlooking a double-height great room anchored by a soaring wall of glass. Framing panoramic views across the Mission Valley, the glazing fills the interior with shifting mountain light while strengthening the connection between house and landscape.

The sectional design of the home takes full advantage of the steep site, allowing the lower level to open naturally to the downhill side while maintaining a grounded presence from the approach above. Throughout the home, warm wood tones, stone surfaces, and dark metal detailing create a quiet material continuity between interior and exterior.

At once rugged and refined, Stonecrest is conceived as a contemporary mountain retreat rooted in the geology, scale, and openness of northwest Montana.
