RATTLESNAKE COURTYARD HOUSE

Located in Missoula’s Rattlesnake neighborhood, the Rattlesnake Courtyard House is a modern inward-focused residence designed around privacy, daylight, and calm outdoor living. Conceived as an urban infill project, the home turns away from limited surrounding views and instead centers itself around a protected courtyard landscape that becomes the heart of the house.

A series of interconnected gabled volumes clad in dark corrugated metal and warm cedar create a quiet architectural composition that feels both contemporary and rooted in Montana’s vernacular forms. Expansive glazing opens the primary living spaces directly to the courtyard, blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors while creating a strong sense of retreat within the city.

Continuous upper monitor windows wrap the perimeter of the home, bringing natural daylight deep into the interior from every side while maintaining privacy from adjacent properties. Throughout the day, shifting light animates the interiors and reinforces the project’s emphasis on atmosphere, simplicity, and connection to nature.

The result is a restrained and highly livable home that prioritizes inward experience, natural light, and a strong relationship to landscape over outward views. Missoula Architect.
